March 1, 2005, Showing is Better Than Telling: The State of PR ROI Metrics
From the American Marketing Association (Phoenix Chapter): "Deborah E. Hamilton, president of MediaMonde, Inc. in Firestone, Colo., explains that many companies and agencies use public relations value (PRV) to measure the success of their public relations initiatives. The formula is: PRV (of any particular print mention) = full-page advertisement rate for that publication x actual amount of space devoted to the company or client x 3 (the theory being that PR is three times more valuable than advertising). Hamilton notes that while the effectiveness of measuring PRV is arguable, it's still a benchmarking tool; PR pros can compare the results of the company's PR efforts from one period to another. Another Hamilton suggestion is to measure coverage quality. PR executives should note whether an article represents the company or client in a positive light or a negative one; how many key messages are included; if an article reaches the target audience; and the importance a publication has given to the story (placement). Using a scale of one to five (or one to 10), marketers could rate the quality of each article and, over a period of time, calculate an average article quality." Read complete article.
